The department was established in 2005, with a primary focus on the science of bioactive natural substances found in plants, animals, microbes and minerals. This pharmacognocy study helps to understand identification, extraction, purification, standardization & formulation of medicines & also to find out adulteration in medicines.
Pharmacognosy department offers courses in Pharmacognosy as part of a five-years learning program, providing the student with the recent development in nature, chemical composition, therapeutic use and analysis of natural drugs with the aim of preparing skilled future pharmacists able to offer patient centered pharmacy services on the area of herbal medicine and dietary supplements. Also the graduate program is dedicated to the training of outstanding scientists in the natural product sciences and aims to contribute to the multidisciplinary drug research and development from natural products.
Currently, the department has a complement of seven faculty members including, one professor, one associate professor and one assistant professor, two lecturer and also two laboratory technicians.
The teaching and research facilities in the department include standard laboratories with relevant equipments. The field of research include investigation and standardization of natural compounds and discovery of new therapeutic agents from natural sources.

The department of Pharmacognocy is completely dedicated to train students according to the high quality education and latest scientific information. Providing excellence in research for local natural resources that may have role in disease management. Also defining quality control methods for assurance of making standard products with desirable safety and efficacy.
