The Faculty of Statistical and Population Studies and Information Technology was established in 1997 as a specialized college in statistics at Al-Neelain University to replace the Institute of Statistics, Cairo University, Khartoum Branch. It was founded by Professor Siddiq Nasser Osman, who was the first dean of the College. At the first phases of its establishment, the College consisted of three main departments, awarding bachelor's degrees with honors in the fields of applied statistics, information technology and population studies. In 1998, the College started to award the Master's and Higher Diploma programs, and it was the first college to offer Master's programs in Statistics - Master of Information Technology - Higher Diploma in Statistics. In 2003, the Faculty of Statistics, Population and Information Technology was merged with the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science to become the College of Technology of Mathematical Sciences and Statistics. In 2016 it took the name: Faculty of Mathematical Sciences and Statistics.
In the framework of the development of the academic curriculum, the Faculty has accommodated new sections in response to the academic development in the mathematics and statistics programs at the bachelor level, the most important of which was the Bachelor of Honors in Actuarial Statistics - Bachelor of Honors in modeling and mathematical computing.
